The Pastoral and Spiritual Support Team offers wellbeing, spiritual and emotional support to the students and staff of the University of Plymouth. We run a drop-in space for students to come and seek support, talk to a pastoral volunteer or a chaplain, or just to have a quiet safe place to relax with a drink away from the busyness of the central part of campus. We also offer workshops, community events, social evenings and support our international students to settle in Plymouth.
We offer this support to all students and staff regardless of their religious, faith or spiritual beliefs, although we also support students with specific faith and spiritual support when this is wanted. We also offer spaces for prayer and meditation.
We are looking for volunteers who are social, warm and empathic, who are good listeners and who care about helping everyone to feel welcome and included. You will also have an interest in wellbeing and spirituality, in the broadest sense. You may or may not be a person of faith, but you must be comfortable in multi-faith teams and you must have a commitment to equality and inclusion. Training and ongoing support will be provided.
You will cover one of the drop-in sessions in at the Pastoral and Spiritual Support Building, welcoming students, helping them to access prayer space if needed, but also chatting and supporting students and staff who use the building. If people are feeling upset or struggling with something, you will offer one to one listening, being a friendly and supportive companion, helping students discuss their concerns and signposting/referring them to chaplains or other student wellbeing services as needed.
Drop-in sessions are on weekdays from 10.00-13.00 and then from 13.00-16.00 and volunteers will have a regular slot in the week. There are also events, workshops and activities at other times and you are welcome and encouraged to attend and support with these if you wish.
Please note: This role doesn’t commence until September 9th so please don’t panic if you do not receive an immediate response to your application. In addition to befriending skills volunteers must be interested in spirituality and comfortable to talk about emotional and spiritual health. If that sounds like you apply by clicking the button below.
