Lead Volunteer Gardener

Type: Growing, Information / advice

Location: All of Plymouth

The Derriford hospital site has various gardens and green spaces that are available to patients or staff & volunteers to access for breaks, a breath of fresh air and a moment of calm. We want to make sure that these spaces are looked after for the benefit of all those who use them as green spaces are proven to improve wellbeing and recovery.

This role is all about making sure these spaces are beautiful and welcoming to visitors, that they improve biodiversity on the site and are well maintained. We are looking for someone to lead other volunteers including local students, sharing expertise, a plan of action and a love of gardening.

This new role will begin with the staff garden areas and develop to include
other gardens and areas of the grounds, including Scott Hospital.

What you will be doing
Care for and maintain garden areas as outlined by the estates team. The
role will begin with the staff lightwell green spaces and the herb garden
and will develop into the wider grounds.
Plant new bulbs and plants to ensure that the gardens flourish and
provide a welcoming space all year round
Maintain paths (edging, sweeping, weeding), benches (painting, cleaning,
light repairs) and planters
Litter pick as required
Care for herbs and saplings/propagated plants in greenhouses
Monitor wildlife where possible, such as species counting, identifying new
insects etc.
Work as a team to suggest improvements (within budget constraints) to
garden spaces
Take ownership of the look and feel of the garden
Maintain high standards of presentation
Ensure tools are well looked after and stored appropriately after each shift
Leading other volunteers – helping to assign tasks and driving the
gardening work forward

The skills you need
Gardening experience and knowledge is essential as we start the project
Physically fit and able to work outdoors for a full or half day
Punctual, dependable and able to work in a team
Great team working skills and ability to lead and support others

What’s in it for you
An opportunity to provide relaxing spaces to staff, volunteers, patients
and visitors.
An insight into the biodiversity of the Derriford site and the chance to
work towards improving sustainability.
You’ll be part of a close-knit gardening volunteer team with support from
estates staff as needed
A sense of satisfaction seeing the gardens and green spaces improve and
become more widely used and shared
A chance to flex those green fingers and have an impact on the
landscapes and environments.

the gardens together.
