What we do
We garden in the Park every Monday. We do whatever needs doing – weeding, planting, pricking out and potting up, sweeping leaves, planting up the raised beds, etc etc. There are specific areas of the Park which we look after – the Memorial Garden, Rose Garden, large azalea bed, other large beds. Some of us bring lunch and work for longer, others just do the morning.
We are a friendly and knowledgeable group of people who love gardening. Some of us have our own gardens but others don’t.
For various reasons our numbers have shrunk recently and we are concerned that we cannot look after the Park as we used to. There are of course a few paid Council gardeners who look after cutting the grass and do all the other areas.
Normally we have several summer fairs when we have our own stalls and invite others to take part. We use the money raised to buy plants etc, and we regularly have a cart with plants on it for sale to the general public.
What we are looking for
We need keen gardeners who want to make a difference and help maintain our beautiful park which is the oldest in the city. We don’t need experts, just people who might like to get out into the fresh air regularly, and who might appreciate a bit of company. We have Dennis, who is our expert gardener and who gives us advice from time to time.
We meet every Monday, for as long as people want to. some just do mornings, but others stay on, bring lunch and work on for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Our tasks include all the things any gardeners normally do – sowing, planting, digging, pruning and weeding. We also have a large greenhouse to look after, and volunteers offer to come down on other days to water when it is necessary.
If you like the sound of all that, we’d like to hear from you. Apply using the button below and we look forward to meeting you soon.
