Elder Tree Befriending

Type: Emotional / social support, Information / advice

Location: All of Plymouth

Elder Tree supports people over the age of 50 who live in the Plymouth area. We have developed a unique and innovative partnership with Plymouth City Council, Livewell Southwest and Primary Care and provide a cutting edge befriending service for vulnerable and socially isolated older people.
We aim to engage the vast majority of our beneficiaries in a social engagement activity close to where they live that generates peer support and new and lasting friendships. To facilitate this we have a programme of events: Active Lives, Active Men, Sporting Memories, coffee mornings and groups along with our 1-1 befriending service for those who are housebound.

We are seeking compassionate people with empathy and understanding of the needs of older people. The ideal volunteer would be able to have a friendly chat with someone, be a good listener and break the isolation that comes with being housebound.
You will be able to commit to offering a few hours a week to someone who needs companionship.
If you have had work or life experience in talking to people with health, mental health or social issues we would love to hear from you.

The befriending will take place in the beneficiaries home during the day and mostly weekdays (although not exclusively).
The role involves listening carefully and empathetically to an older person.
Maintaining confidentiality of the person you visit.
Reporting back to the Volunteer Team at Elder Tree on a regular basis.
Raising any concerns or issues that need to be addressed.
