What are Event Volunteers?

As part of the Event Volunteer Team you’ll be amongst the first to hear about new exciting volunteering opportunities at events, in your community and how you can support them.

There will usually be a choice of specific roles depending on the event. The tasks and responsibilities of each specific role, the expectations of you as a volunteer, including time required, will be clearly defined in advance, to help you decide whether a particular role is suitable for you.

What might a specific role at an event involve?

Typical tasks might include: 

*       Welcoming and checking in/out of spectators to event sites and locations

*       Supporting the volunteer manager with set-up and pack down of the event

*       Providing information to participants and spectators

*       Signposting spectators around the event, such as marshalling, cheering or handing out refreshments.

*       Supporting environmental issues – green champion

Tasks which are not expected of you as a volunteer

Volunteers are NOT permitted to do any of the following activities and should not be asked or expected to do them;

  • Traffic management
  • Security or enforcement
  • Any role which has not been risk assessed

Would this role suit you?

No formal qualifications are required to be an Event Volunteer, however, to carry out this role well and enjoy it you’ll need to;

  • be aged 18 or over
  • display a warm and friendly disposition,
  • have a positive outlook
  • be reliable, dependable, honest and trustworthy and courteous
  • be non-discriminatory and respectful of others.

Training and ongoing support

Prior to the start of any event you will receive an induction session so that you know exactly what you’ll be doing and all other relevant training will also be provided, for example: safeguarding; confidentiality and data protection; your own safety and wellbeing as a volunteer; extra safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic;


You may claim reimbursement for pre agreed out of pocket expenses such as travel to your place of volunteering.

DBS Checks If required PCC will carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at no cost to the volunteer.


As a volunteer you are of course free to stop volunteering at any time.

You will be given a clear point of contact for all aspects of your volunteering including for any feedback, suggestions or concerns.
